My Taxi Story - Alex Cherup

My name is Alex Cherup, I work with AmeriCorp as the Youth Transition Program Director, a part of the VISTA program. I think society needs to look at the disability movement as the civil rights movement of the 21st century. The aggregate disability population is the largest minority in the country, yet it is the least represented in the mainstream media and the mainstream society. We need to incorporate these individuals into society, because if we do not we are basically a weaker community. What I like about this taxi service is that it allows individuals to feel included, to feel part of the community and to be part of the community. There is a lot to be gained from having an taxi service that is familiar with working with individuals with disabilities, so that basic mistakes are not made just because a person is ignorant of the needs of some people with disabilities.
