Racism in Halifax Broadcast Date: June 24, 1962 Racist attitudes responsible for the miserable conditions of Africville are prevalent in the city of Halifax in the 1960s. In this footage from a 1962 CBC documentary called Close-up: Figure Your Colour Against Mine, a CBC reporter talks to "folks on the street" about racism in Canada. During an interview with a young black man, the reporter uses a derogatory term for black residents.

• In the 1960s black Canadians found it difficult to get the most basic services such as renting and buying houses, finding employment and getting haircuts.
• While the majority of Halifax's black population did not live in Africville, it was home to those who wanted to live relatively free from the racist attitudes of the predominantly white population.

  • @wavejumpinseadoo the value of a dollar since so much is given to him nor does he appreciate that money is very difficult to earn.

  • @wavejumpinseadoo I nor he can relate to that, it's not like it was his grand father or some other relative that he knows. He was brought up in the same lifestyle as me with the same opportunities as me, except he gets a lot handed to him, and that is what I don't like. And my blood boils when aboriginals are given homes, exempt from tax, given a free education and then squander it all. There is absolutely no excuse for that. Again, I like my friend, but he doesn't fully

  • @MyHealingSoul paying $17000/ year for university and driving me deep into debt when my buddy down the hall goes for free. What bothers me even more is that since he's not footing the bill I, and we, the taxpayers are paying for him to come here and not take his studies seriously. Again, whenever we talk about how we have to pay for our education he pulls out a line like "Your ancestors gave blankets infected with small pox to our ancestors to kill them off"). But again, neither

  • @MyHealingSoul First of all, a very good friend of mine is Mi'kmaq, but for my generation ( I'm 19 years old) the animosity directed at aboriginals is mainly jealousy. I don't know anyone my age who dislikes aboriginals for their culture or for being different, the main reason I don't like a lot of them is because they are given so much for free that we have to pay so dearly for. Now I know that in the past our ancestors hurt your ancestors, but in the present, I don't like

  • LOL!!!! Typical Canadian closet racism!

  • the reporter said "nigger" @ 1:53

  • "we live in a white country"

Don't worry! In about 20 years, the majority of the population of Canada will be Asian, because our nation's birth rate is declining and our federal government has a liberal immigration policy towards China and India.

  • Do they still play "coon broom" in Halifax?

  • The reporter should have learned the proper way of saying Negro.

  • this is too funny bad but funny

  • @MyHealingSoul I see by your profile page that the real reason you prefer places with overt racism is because you, yourself are racist and you fit in better with other racists. Please don't come to Canada. We have enough homegrown jerks.

  • Canada has always had a higher class of people--even back in 1962. I am one quarter African. As a child growing up in Toronto during the 1970s and 80s you had the odd kid calling a black kid the N-Word or an Indian kid being called the P-Word – but there was no serious violence or systemic racism like they have down in the USA. If you'll notice some of the people in the video had slight racial biases. But their responses are generally decent.

  • 1:54 lol , this reporter is awesome

  • This is not racist by 1962 standards if you look at the customs in the day elsewhere, Nova Scotia was one of the more tolerant places

  • reporter hahaha!!! got caught in his prejudice, or most likely just a freudian slip

  • that reporter got BURNEDD

  • @CrazyKraut20 Canadian image outside of these borders is carefully maintained by the government. Canada is presented as a near utopia. In reality, it is a sickening cesspool of racism mainly directed at aboriginals. In the US bigots aren’t afraid to admit their racism; in Canada it’s all about closet racism, hypocrisy and denial. I prefer the open racism of the US; at least I know who my enemies are.

  • i like the guy @ 1:10 ^^ the women @ 3:35 gave me a headache -_-
