dsmer104 why is it that every time someone speaks up on behalf of the humane treatment of horses that it is assumed that they know nothing about horses and of course could not possibly own one or maybe more? I am very well aquainted with the cost and time and effort involved with owning a horse as well as the fact that they feel pain, fear and are intelligent sentient beings. Lastly if we cannot regulate the breeding of the horses how do we regulate the humane treatment and slaughter of them?

@tabatha767 Do you own horses? Have you ever had to provide food, shelter, or veterinary care for a half ton + animal? If you have not done either, are you willing and able to purchase and assume care for an unwanted horse? Do you have an extra $2400 *minimum* in your annual budget to support a horse, and the knowledge to do so competently? We cannot even regulate human "breeding", how to you suggest we regulate the humans breeding the horses? Are starvation, abuse, and neglect a better end?

Also do you know Dr. Lenz is employed by the company that uses mares to produce urine for the Premarin drug? Yes that company needs slaughter! It is all about the dollar and has NOTHING to do with the welfare of horses! Stop the problem at the source the mare and stallion. No foal no unwanted horse!

Slaughter is for food animals and horses are not bred for food! They are bred for everything but! and as a result are given drugs banned from the human food chain! Allowing the slaughter of horses only allows the BIG breeders the ability to continue to overbreed literally using slaughter as the garbage can for getting rid of the horses that no longer are making them enough money! The wrong colour means a horse should be slaughtered?

Too many people breed their horses without really a good reason why.
