@bbskin77 This is not even the Monarch residence, The king and the queen live in the Zarzuela Palace. This is in a way an spectacle for the tourists. In the Zarzuela the security is extreme and no touristic spectacles are offered :)

I'm surprised the civil guard didn't flip out. One time I tried to take a photo of the palace gate with two civil guards in front of it and they freaked out!
