Apart from Richard Garriot's original "Ultima", no RPG game in history is more important or influential than Andrew C. Greenberg and Robert Woodhead's "Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord" from 1981. In this LP I play the excellent Japanese SNES remake from 1992 with the English fan translation patch by Aeon Genesis.

(In case you're wondering about the naming of the characters, please keep in mind that the party members are all of Evil alignment...;)

  • Which version of Wizardry I is this? This one looks 16-bit.

  • @WeAreDevo456 Yes it's a 16-bit version; a Japanese-only remake of the first game for the Super Famicom. The game never came out in the West but has been unofficially translated into English by the translation group Aeon Genesis.

  • Demiath, the episode is on youtube! If you bang in Magnum PI and look for an episode with a dungeon start pic. It's titled something like "Thomas crashes Higgin's security system". It might well be dungeon master.

  • I saw it now, and that's neither the "real" Dungeon Master game nor any Wizardry title that I know of. It looks suspiciously good for an early 1980s game, and if I'm allowed to guess I'd say the production company behind Magnum simply created some graphics specifically for this episode and made it look like it was an actual game.

  • Was this the video game that Magnum played in the 1985 episode "little games" in Magnum PI?

  • Interesting question. I've never watched the show so I wouldn't know (was a bit too young for television in 1985), but keep in mind that this is a remake released in 1992. Magnum might very well have played any of the original Wizardry I-III, though, as they had all been released by '85. There were many similar games released in the 1980's but most of them came out during the second half of the decade.

  • It looks kind of like a MUD game with pictures and menus. This is neat.

  • @janas19 Boo, this is one if not the best game evar!

  • Hahahahahahaha! The Palin Bunch

  • Do you ever get to cast Tiltowait against Werdna in this version? this looks and sounds way better than the apple II version I grew up with.

  • This game looks like a terrible nightmare filled with inventories and lists. when will it end????????

  • Dude, all your characters are retards

  • I like the names of your characters. Lol.

  • You are probably right. The earliest game that I played was "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiago?" and that was 1987 and the game had graphics that were miles behind those of the Magnum episode.
