On this day 51 years ago, astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. He was launched into space at 17,545 mph on February 20, 1962, orbiting our planet three times before returning home just under five hours later.

You said it perfectly, most people nowadays could care less about the millions of people who died in many terrible ways so they can sit here and do whatever they want. What really gets me worked up is when I drive through neighborhoods on veterans day or memorial day and only see a couple American flags flying. Another thing is how will kids learn about this stuff when that generation is gone, and they missed it all because they were glued to twitter. I only see it getting worse in the future.

what sucks is the only way to really see and understand what it meant to be a true patriot and to have pride to fly the American flag and be proud of it is thru these videos now, sad we have become a nation of _____ "one can fill in the blanks"

"United States stands or falls... under world publicity" Too bad they had to lie to everyone about what is really out there. The world has grown up and the lies are like too much salt in the soup. So much hard work has gone into an effort that the worlds people should be able to stand proud that a human endevour has actually enabled humans to explore in-person beyond our own nest. That proud feeling I can still recall, has been replaced by enormous disappointment that the real story is a secret.

God bless you! At WPAFB I met John Glenn. Hundreds there but he was quiet, elegant yet earnest. Not tall but a gentle giant. My *mission* was that of a photojournalist. Among many people, meeting him is one of the besst moments in my life. George Kennedy another. He is a giant. My hand swollowed by his while shaking hands.
