Professor Matsumaru of Shizuoka University's Department of Mechanical Engineering is spearheading an effort to develop a new operational interface for in-home robots.

The new interface is unique because it features foot operation. Previous robot operational interfaces required the use of keyboard and mouse to input commands. This made it hard for people with disabilities or the elderly to operate an in-home robot.

The step-on interface (SOI) function uses a projector to display the operation screen on the surface of the floor, and the user steps on the buttons to display the operation instructions.

Icons make it easy for people with disabilities, the elderly, and foreigners to input instructions to the robot.

The SOI interface is expected to prove useful in medical and industrial settings.
