Never on an official release, "Hard On Love" was a song Television played live in the early years. This recording is from a July 25, 1975 show at The Piccadilly Inn, Cleveland. The group lineup at this time included Fred Smith on bass, as Richard Hell had left the band earlier in '75.

-I've also uploaded to YT two other unreleased songs from this same show, "Kingdom Come" & "Poor Circulation". Plus Television in '75 doing "Breakin' In My Heart", which Tom recorded on his '79 solo album "Tom Verlaine". Also, from another show earlier in '75 when Hell was still in the band, the unreleased song "UFO", plus some '74 recordings.

  • Didn't Verlaine rework this into another song for one of his solo albums? I've never heard "Hard On Love," but this definitely sounds very familiar.

  • @robert101455 Offhand, I can't think of any Tom solo songs that sound derived from this, although some early songs did get reworked later. For instance, "Excitement" was an early song Tom & Hell co-wrote, with Hell writing lyrics & singing. After Hell left, Tom used the music for a new song, "Adventure".

I once uploaded a '74 recording of "Excitement". It lasted a few months before "Richard Meyers"(Hell's real name) lodged a copyright infringement claim against it, & spiked it. Bloody Hell!

  • this the same gig that the live recordings of opening band Rocket from the tombs stem from?

  • Listen to "Without a Word" on Dreamtime, it's more or less the same song.

  • Id love to hear those Eric Frandsens Fancy guitar pickings...

  • Now, this is the TV I know & love. Nice find - would have been amazing to be there - I was in NYC briefly in '75, saw the Stilettos (pre-Blondie Debbie Harry, with Ivan Kral) but, alas, never walked into a TV show...

  • I hope Richard Hell does not retire this video as mine one year ago.

  • Thank you posting all these rarities...
