Sadly a lot of the video drivers that are written for Linux are not nearly as optimized as they are in other operating systems. If you are running Intel video in Ubuntu 9.04 then you might want to wait for 9.10. I heard the performance went down in the 9.04 build and they're planning on getting it fixed in the next build.

Its definitely sounds like a hardware issue. My old PC with Linux Ubuntu is running on a 2.2GHZ Pentium 4, 1gig of RAM, and a 128mb ATI graphics card. I think you are right, you probably would want to go with a dedicated graphic card. I would go with the older ATI cards. I have absolutely no problems with my ATI with Linux. Some say different but I have no problems. Don't make the mistake of getting a card that is too new because it may not work your PC and 350wat maybe too low for it.

since you want to game i would upgrade system memory and get a video card with at least 256MB. At the moment I would set shared graphic ram to 128 in the bios and see it that helps until you upgrade.

i'd go for nvidia geforce 9800gt probably, or an ATI Radeon 4890x2, perhaps, its just my thought, if it doesn't work, lemme know i'll ask around and get back to you...
Thanks for the help everyone! Picked up a nVidia 8400 GS card (512MB DDR2 Graphics RAM) and everything works great!

How much memory does your video card have? With my T60 I have a video card that has 128MB of memory. How much system memory do you have? Compiz works great for me but I don't play games.
