This song can be broken into pieces as an application for reviewing idioms in a classroom or home environment. Discussing each verse, each phrase, can provide material for various lessons on metaphorical use of words in context. Also, singing along with the verses helps bolster speaking ability and familiarity with idioms.
LYRICS:
"ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS, but not for a BACK SEAT DRIVER. They say CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT and that just DRIVES ME UP THE WALL. They say EVERY CLOUD HAS A SILVER LINING, that something's FINGER LICKIN' GOOD. They tell me to GO THE EXTRA MILE when all I want is to HIT THE HAY.
Everywhere are people talking to each other using
Words and phrases I don't get, please what do they all mean?
You know IT TAKES TWO TO TANGO, so don't try JOSHIN' ME AROUND. I better KNOCK ON WOOD before I LEND YOU MY EAR. That MUMBO JUMBO ain't for me; try the NEW KID ON THE BLOCK. I won't listen, OVER MY DEAD BODY, I'm gonna scat, put the PEDAL TO THE METAL.
Everywhere are people talking to each other using
Words and phrases I don't get, please what do they all mean? Well when you have a word or phrase that sounds so crazy, you can Think about what's going on, what else they could be saying; if the situation were so that they could never mean exactly what their words mean they must mean something other than what the words really mean, they must be using what we call... an idiom.
It's a new day, time to RISE AND SHINE. I'm feeling SAFE AND SOUND. That kind of TONGUE AND CHEEK humor ain't that funny. Perhaps just stay home I'm feeling UNDER THE WEATHER. But VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE, so off I go, yesterday is WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE.
Everywhere are people talking to each other using
Words and phrases I don't get, please what do they all mean? Well when you have a word or phrase that sounds so crazy, you can Think about what's going on, what else they could be saying; if the situation were so that they could never mean exactly what their words mean they must mean something other than what the words really mean, they must be using what we call... an idiom."
