This is the refrain of a popular song from World War 1. It was composed by Ivor Novello to words by an American lady, Lena Guilbert Ford. Tragically she was one of the first ever civilian victims of aerial warfare when she was killed by a bomb dropped on her Maida Vale home in 1916. In Britain, it was far and away the best selling song of the war (sheet music in those days!) comfortably out-selling the more up-beat 'Tipperary' and 'Pack up your Troubles'. The words of the refrain remain fresh and its sentiment, taken literally or metaphorically, has modern day relevance to any war, anywhere.
a lovely song so well played brought a lump to my throat as i thought of the slaughter in the trenches and the people left behind. My uncle was killed in the first world war

@bingcro Thank you for your kind comment. This song was far and away the best seller, in sheet music terms, of World War 1. The music strikes just the right mood and the words seem timeless.
