My daughter and I laughed so hard watching LeTigre in this video. lol She's such a character. It's been 39 days since LeTigre allowed me to touch her for the first time. Yesterday and today, it was cooler out and I spent quite a bit more time with her. Today was the first day that I was able to touch her chest and front legs. I even managed to get her to pick up her left front foot at one point, but my camera was having issues and shut off, so it missed it. :o(
In case you haven't seen all of the videos, LeTigre was adopted nearly a year ago. I was told that she was the lead/boss mare in a herd of 500. She was UNTOUCHABLE. As you can see, she still wears the BLM neck tag instead of a halter, because she was so wild that they were unable to put a halter on her.
She has been round penned, which taught her to face me when she wanted the pressure off, but she refused to "join up" or accept me. Finally I decided that everything I have learned while training horses for the past nearly 30 years was not working and I had to try something different. SO, when I decided to attempt to touch her again, I made direct eye contact with her. To most horses, that is a sign of aggression, but it seemed to relax LeTigre, and she allowed the first touch on June 28th. Since then, I have touched her as much as she is comfortable with every day. I know if I push too hard, she could revert back to not giving me any trust, so I take it just a little further every day....She is doing AWESOME and I love her!!! :o)

You did great when you found that itchy spot on her neck that she loves to get scratched and makes faces when you do. By scratching it a little bit and then stopping, with the itch still continuing, you got her to ASK for more scratching. A small but important step all by itself.
If you can find something the horse WANTS you to do for it, you've found a great key to building trust.

I love how when you quit petting her...she creates the draw and turns her nose back to you to get you to keep on scratching...I love your videos and she is such a unique horse.

thank- you for filling in the information, soo interesting to see her come along. The mare I rescued was completely wild and now 6- not a mustang but took on lead mare role too. It has been 9 months and she is finally really trusting me - but it has taken a great deal of trying and being patient. She is testing everything you thought you knew about "natual horsemanship" = but it makes it interesting doesn't it. ;) thanx soo much for sharing this.
