Skinny and Fatty - Chibideka monogatari 1958

Original Title: Chibideka monogatari //
A chubby boy from a wealthy family befriends a lean and poorer classmate in this film from 1959, a mainstay of the Film Festival during the '60s and '70s. Komatsu ("Skinny") excels at school, sports, and making friends. Oyama ("Fatty"), isn't quite so successful in these areas. After the boys become good friends, Komatsu tries to help Oyama to think and act on his own. His influence on Oyama continues, even after Komatsu's family must move away.

I hate dubbing with a passion, but it's a necessary evil when it comes to children's films. Subtitles aren't much help if you can barely read. ;)

My brother and I loved this film when we saw it back, I think, in the mid-60's. It came on sunday after church on some children's film festival. Does anyone remember?

It was the CBS Children's Film Festival. From 1967-1971 the CCFF was broadcast annually on Sunday afternoons in the spring, before moving to the Saturday morning lineup the fall of 1971. Skinny and Fatty & Hand in Hand were two of the mainstays during those years.

I'm 50. I liked this when I was a kid. "Thank You Komatsu".I thought I was the only kid in the US that saw this. None of my friends did. I'm glad I'm not the only one! Why does this simple message seem so important to me, and maybe you too?

Wow! I remember this from 40 years ago, and I remember loving the chemistry that developed between Komatsu and his burly buddy. I wish I could see the whole thing again! Thank you for reintroducing it after all this time!

@CBSCFFestival I actually don't believe that that's true. I have showed my daughter foreign films from before she was able to read and even speak fluently. I think pre-readers are used to following stories without fully understanding the language. And I think I think sub-titles actually encourage children to read because they want to know what the characters are saying. It's valuable for children to hear other languages being spoken, even if they don't understand.

I remember this when I was a little kid in the late 60's and early 70's. The elementary school I went to would show it sometimes several times a year. I think I even saw it at the Junior High I went to also in the 1970's. It was great I wish I could find a site online that has the whole movie in one piece. It looks like someone split it into five pieces and posted it on here.

@evolesel I saw this when I was a kid. It was the first time I'd ever cried watching tv and it was embeded in my heart. Once the internet got going, I was able to find this on video and now is a part of my collection.
