It's a bipolar DRSSTC with one secondary driven and their bases connected. Power comes from 3 12V 7AH gel cells in the backpack stepped up to 250 VDC. The longest arc I measured so far was 20.5 inches. I haven't tried messing with the coupling yet; this coil might put out a few more inches of arc. Details here: http://www.lukekambic.com/plasmahandle.html

Power draw: 200-250 watts
Primary Fres: 295 KHz
Primary capacitor: 0.075 uF
IGBTs: HGTG30N60B3D (TO-247)
Filter capacitors: 10 parallel 120 uF photoflash caps
Driver: Steve Ward's 2006-era DRSSTC driver

Thanks to Steve Ward, Jimmy Hynes, and all the HV nerds on the net.

  • Can you link me to schematics or basic overview pictures of its wonderful innards? Pretty please? I have build TC's myself but this design really intrigues me

  • @TechnoW1zard As it happens, in a week or so I'll be putting up a website with some construction photos and details on this project. I'll put a link in the description. It's nothing too original electronically, though! It would take a cleverer soul than me to improve much on Steve Ward's DRSSTC drive circuitry.

  • This is a bipolar system, so there's a coil on both sides.

  • Thanks for posting the video. Very impressive! How big is your secondary coil?

  • @xee2vids The secondaries are 8 inches of 34 AWG.

  • The primary is inside the secondary, in the longer of the two pipes. It's 7 or 8 turns of 10 AWG wire.

It definitely helps to have all the right parts. I grabbed DRSSTC parts whenever I could for 7 years before I had everything needed to build one properly.

I'll definitely bring this thing out on halloween.

  • Just jump into a swimming pool to see what happen. lol

  • Wow look a new weapon for the cops!

  • At first I thought it looked like a bad idea, in that it looked extremely dangerous. While that opinion didn't change at all, it's still fucking badass.

  • Badass! Sell it to law enforcement agency's and make a fortune lol.

  • "The secondaries are " - Do you have more than one secondary?
