I was listening to these 16th Chopin Competition people do this, everybody plays the e minor, and they are certainly not ridiculous, but next to this, their work just pales and fades. What is it that Lipatti does so well?

I sometimes think that if Lipatti had lived long enough to record most of the standard repertoire, you could pretty much send all the other pianists home...

He must be the best, because no music ever needs to be played better than this. Perfect, powerful, yet eminently selfless musicianship. His phenomenal technique is just a miraculous plus.
