Zarah Leander - Das gibt's nur einmal (1932)

The legendary movie "Der Kongress tanzt" (aka "Le congres s'amuse"/"Congress dances") revolutionized the movie musical... In this movie starring Lilian Harvey and Willy Fritsch, Lilian as Christl sings the song 'Das gibt's nur einmal' while driving in a carriage through Vienna and surroundings on her way to a castle. As she sings, the people alongside the road and working in the fields join her in the chorus of the song. This movie, directed by Eric Charell, became a tremendous succes and was made in a German, French and English version... The song,also known as Christl's song became as legendary as the movie... Charell had to leave Germany as did the composer Werner Richard Heymann and Conrad Veidt in 1933 and the movie was banned between 1937 and 1945.

Zarah Leander recorded her Swedish version in 1932...

The singer of this version IS Zarah Leander. The star of the movie is Lilian Harvey as can be seen in the video.

Yes, the English version is still in existence, thank goodness (I have seen it--and also they show clips from it on the DVD release of "Der Kongress Tanzt". I had read that about Dagover--She sure pulled it off well!

Thanks for the info! Dagover sure fooled a lot of people where her true age was concerned. I find this era of multi-lingual movie production very interesting. The great Laurence Olivier played his first movie role opposite Lilian Harvey in "The temporary widow", the Engl. version of "Hokus Pokus"...

Yes she did, in all 3 versions (I have the German and French version, don't know if a print of the English version still exists). Did you know that when Lil Dagover died in 1980, it was revealed she was actually 10 years older than she claimed to be (born in 1887 iso 1897)!!! She had a very very long career and was a leading lady right up to the end of the WWII. After that she became a character actress, always remainging the "grande dame"

Correct. Zarahs voice is unmistakable. 1932 was she only known in Sweden, but she was to become the no 1 movie goddess in Germany from 1937 onwards and - in fact - all over Europe during the war.

Wenn eine Substanz mürbe ist, sollte man sie nicht mehr Sanieren. Wenn die Inflation den Euro durchdrungen hat, sprich die Finanzwelt von der Gefahr eines Staatsbankrotts in Europa.

Trägt Italien den Euro zu grabe? Italien sollte ihre Währung (Lira) wieder bekommen, dann kann man in Venedig wieder einen Cappuccino trinken, den man bezahlen kann. Deutschland wird in Europa immer unbeliebter durch den Euro, das hatten wir schon. Die Kosten für Soziales geht schneller nach oben als der viel gepriesene Aufschwung.

Vor den Euro waren es nicht so viele Flaschensammler, und es gab auch keine Tafel wie heute. Jetzt ist eine Armut, die es vorher nicht gab. Wenn man für das kostenlose Essen, Schlange steht muss, und dabei die Menschenwürde verliert, kann das nicht der richtige Weg sein.
