The ballad was written by Lopez, her then-husband, Cris Judd, and Cory Rooney (who produced the track with Dan Shea). "Alive" was written for the soundtrack to Lopez's film Enough (although not included on its soundtrack album). Following the themes of the film, the song describes the struggles of battered women, who are able to overcome their abusive husbands to make it out alive. Lopez sings, "The strength to stand alone/The power of not knowing and letting go/I guess I've found my way it's simple when it's right/Feeling lucky just to be here tonight/And happy just to be me and be alive". The song has become an anthem for battered women across the country and several women have written to Lopez about how that song has affected them. On an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, a woman even came up to Lopez and explained how that song kept her going even after the abuses she endured. In 2002, "Alive" earned Lopez a Billboard Latin Music Award for Best-Selling Latin Dance Single of the Year, with the song's Thunderpuss Club Mix.
