Depicted is the preparation and placement of an epidural catheter for post-operative pain control in an anesthetized pediatric patient. Sterile technique is used for this procedure. Two methods for localizing the epidural space are shown in the video. Loss of resistance to fluid and not air is recommended. Insertion of a lumbar epidural catheter is performed flawlessly by Dr. Wong.
Thank you for viewing the video. The baby is anesthetized i.e., asleep and not feeling the epidural being placed. The reason why we place epidurals in children is to help control their pain during the most painful parts of the operation and to also control their pain after the operation, when the anesthesia has been discontinued. Surgery on the abdomen, urologic systems and lower extremities is very painful. We don't want then to suffer. The epidural promotes a quicker return to normal.
