I think the solar still is best used to purify wild water rather than cature it. Look for a natural deppession instead of digging. Place a container of wild water under the tarp. let the sun evaoprate the water in the day. the next morning if you did everthing right your 2nd container will contain drinking water.

when you use the t-shirt method, you got to make sure you dont have rests of washing and softeners chemicals (if used) in that t-shirt.

One of the best water filters in an emergency situation is a cotton T-shirt (preferably an old and used one). Just fold the T-shirt in half so that you get four layers of cloth and filter the water through it, it will filter out bacteria, amoeba and cyst up to 99,999%. Such a simple filter has a LRV (Logarithmic Retention Value) of 3-4. Chemical contaminants can be filtered out by plant/wood charcoal in lieu of activated carbon even as it has a by the factor of 10 - 20 times lower surface area

What is your take on rainwater off of a tarp. Where I live (70769) we have more rain fall than we want at times and collection of rain water is to me the most logical way to get decent water I would filter it any way since the tarp could get a bird pooping on it and you have that in your water. DId you know that when you are laying under a tree and you feel those little droplets on you it is said to be bug droppings imagine that in your water too so you always want to filter water.
