Lady, the reason there's so much negative press about polygamy is because there's nothing positive about it. Try thinking for yourself once and see if you survive the beating your husband gives you. You know you're all emotionally abused and dying to break free. Unite! Gather all the sharp knives in your village and liberate yourselves!!!!
The best way to practice polygamy is by having everyone get what they want rather than going by what OTHERS are telling them they should want. If it so happens that a wife wants other wives and not other husbands, then she is not looking for lovers, she wants to either 'share' her relationship or she wants sex with other women, as well.
My issue with #3 is that it confuses a 'right' w/ action. I have the right to kill someone if they break into my house but that doesn't mean that I have to. I can just shoot them in the leg. In poly the rights should not be individual since a relationship is based on TWO or more people and not just ONE person. If you want to go off adding another spouse to your poly without 1st asking your current partner then it's likely you're going to find that other partner leaving.
If the Christian God actually exists, and he sets morals, then yes, going by his plan your #3 point done in a CONSENSUAL way is fair. Unless you can show for sure that he doesn't exist, then it's not really an excuse, it would indeed be the standard for all humans to follow. I understand that there are different standards/beliefs out there and since this area (God's existence) is largely unproven, that's why I'm speaking in a hypothetical way.
So you believe #3 IS fair if you are christian or believe in a biblical god!? I don't think that is a good enough excuse, besides, there are lots of christians that are not conservative, and there are lots of conservatives that aren't christians, and other "gods" that can also be interpreted to say "unfair is fair". What do you mean you have issue with #3? As it stands, or my definition of it? No matter what they actually want, all should have the right... maybe even be encouraged!
Yes, unless you are a Christian or believe in the existence of the biblical God, then #3 is unfair. That's not always a part of the definition based on the dictionaries I've looked at. The only issue I have with #3 is that it doesn't take into account women's choices to want other wives and not other husbands. Once you do that, then you're defeating the purpose of CONSENT of ALL adults for adult consensual polygamy.
Whereas, in the past, you would never hear about gay marriage, well now we have it. So that also opens the door to same-sex and bisexual polygamy. Then there's also polyamory crowd which is where you'll find them engaging in multiple parter NON-marital relationships whether it be multiple boyfriends or gfs. And of course there's plenty of bisexual activity in those crowds. So polygamy in our culture will very likely be practiced in many forms, that is, if it's ever legalized.
You also mention not hearing about polygyny turning into polyandry or polygynandry in history. I'd say that's because many cultures back then were highly patriarchal. Even the United States used to be until women started fighting for equality. The reason I believe you will see ALL forms of polygamy in American culture is because of our equal opportunity between men and women and our more open sexuality. cont'd
I think you were asking about my comment about polygyny turning into polygynandry. The definition of polygamy is not based on just a conviction but the actual act or state of being married to multiple people. So while a polygynous couple may be open to having multiple husbands if they wanted to, but that doesn't mean they have to or will do it. And being allowed to do it, that alone, does not turn polygyny into something else until more partners are added.

There are different (main) levels of definition (of polygyny).
1) A marriage that includes more than one woman.
2) A marriage that includes more than one woman, but not more than one man.
3) A system where men can marry more than one woman, but women do not have the right to marry more men.
We agree that 1 and 2 are ok, but that the morality of 3 is certainly is up for debate?
