Every summer on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in Western New York, more than 150,000 visitors over nine weeks come through these gates, ready to take in a feast of ideas, performances, recreational activities and spiritual exploration.

  • As idealistic as this video narration sounds, it is certainly an underestimate of the total experience. There is not only so much to do, there are also so many people eager to connect and share in the learning experience. Literally, people who've never met before will stop to meet and discuss philosophy, art, science, or speakers on the street.

  • The best part is how alive the air feels, like electric connectivity--not at all like the annoying person on a red-eye flight who will not stop talking--like a beehive of intellect, hospitality, and humanity. The moment you arrive, you begin to realize just how palpable the ease and inquisitive nature of the residents and visitors is. I've only been there once for a week's stay, but I hope to make it my first of many more summer stays.
