"Legendary producer, sound system pioneer and music entrepeneur, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd established the famous Studio One Records at 13 Brentford Road, Kingston, Jamaica in 1963."

"Studio One is unquestionably the most important label in the history of Reggae. Clement Dodd released the finest in Reggae music for over 50 years and the catalogue makes up a who's who of Jamaican music. Bob Marley and The Wailers, The Skatalites, Horace Andy, Jackie Mittoo, Burning Spear, Delroy Wilson and on and on. Described by Chris Blackwell as the "University of Reggae", Soul Jazz Records are proud of its association with such a great label."

  • can i buy this mix ? and if so from where .

  • its all in the info man! ;)

  • That is a very good question!

I cant say for sure, this Dub version was only released in 2004, after Coxsone's death.

I can only guess it was recorded in the early 70s, maybe a few years after he first recorded Dawn Penn's original.

So wether he had Augustus in the studio with him doing this version, or used the sample from one of Augustus' tracks, or someone else played the melodica for this, is anyones guess.

  • :S Not sure about this track at all... I don't buy the story about the history of this one.. I may be wrong, but i've listened carefully and anyone who really likes this rhythm (many, many versions exist) can identify a fundamental difference with this version. Maybe it's an early experiment.. 'maybe'...

  • Well the fundemental difference i can see is dub and reggae.

Dawn penns track was recorded in 1967 according to the web, the dub movement took place a few years later, thats when the Dub speacilist made a name for himself, so i really see this track being made after No No No as a different take on it.

  • @djsmithy yeah dub back in the late 60's early 70's till about 1975 were basically "versions" no real effects like delay or reverb , mostly chopped up guitar and vocals and emphasized on the drum and bass.

  • @djsmithy its most likely Pablov Black playing melodica he was the resident piano /organ/melodica player for studio one

  • @djsmithy This was the B-side of Papa Michigan & General Smiley's "Jah A The Creator", released in the very early 80s approximately. The overdubs are by the Brentford Rockers. Melodica is by Pablove Black, drums by Horsemuth, bass by Bagga Walker

  • 2011.05.26.

  • This is the dub cut to Michigan and Smilie's "Jah a the Creator", released on 45 in 1979 with overdubs from the Brentford Rockers (Horsemouth Wallace, Bagga Walker, Soljie) - that's why it's titled "Creator Version"

  • suPergUt

  • The song with Dawn Penn was so jazzy, now the version has gone nyahbinghy dubwise. Studio One power !
