In April 2009, LOCUS Architecture brought together notable Twin Cities cyclists
to make their mark and make a difference. During two bike-art-making rallies
in Minneapolis, the first at the Northrup King Building and another at the One
On One Bicycle Studio, participants bunny-hopped, spun, skidded, and cruised
over white stock, recording their individual tread signatures. LOCUS developed
an original process to make the tread-monoprints in order to raise money for
the local outreach program Full Cycle. The prints were displayed at
ARTCRANK 2009 - Minneapolis third annual bicycle-poster show - and sold at
Art-A-Whirl an open-studio tour of NE Minneapolis. Given the success of the
first attempts, LOCUS is optimistic about the projects future. Gene Oberpriller
was effusive about the process and results, resounding that he wanted to
make more. Everyone who has made a signature wants to give it another go,
said Adam Jonas of LOCUS. Kids love it, adults enjoy it; its a great way to
bring a bunch of people together, make some art, and raise money for a good
cause. This process is scalable and reproducible. A video is now up on
YouTube so that others can replicate this process and perhaps raise a few
bucks for cycling-related causes in their own communities.

LOCUS inspiration for the project is twofold. First, the team wanted to
assemble a group of individuals who incorporate cycling into their lifestyle in
various ways. The collection of resulting monoprints would represent the
diversity of cycling life here in the Twin Cities, home to the nations #2 bicycling
municipality. Be it the daily commuter, the professional racer, or the
recreational cruiser, we are united by the belief that bikes make our lives better.
Second, the team intends to donate the sale proceeds to Full Cycle to get more
bikes out to those who dont have access to them. Full Cycle, a local non-profit,
uses bikes to create long- lasting relationships with homeless youth by
teaching the importance of biking and recycling, the knowledge to build and
repair bikes, and basic business skills. At Full Cycle, the bike is not only a
means of transportation; it is conduit for change.

The poster making process revealed you dont have to be an artist to create a
beautiful work of art. A persons riding style is as unique as a signature or
fingerprint; no two riders leave the same impression upon the world and that
impression bears significant impact. How we tread on the earth today affects
more than the surfaces upon which we ride. It addresses the exhaustion of
finite resources, public health and well-being, transit planning and cultural
identities. Recording these imprints brings out the beauty of the rider
intertwined with a bike while exposing the impact we have on future
generations. Conversely, assembling a spectrum of individual imprints
collapses the fields upon which we all play; bikes bring us together.
