right about the 5 min mark that ugly pissed off smoke started pouring out. good timing fellas. never like seeing that stuff.

The heavier the smoke, the thicker, hotter, blacker.. The smoke looks like it's not just floating, but being pushed out. The more likely it's going to be followed by oxygen starved fire. They just prevented a flashover for whomever is going to be fighting it from the floor. Typically, however, if it's old like this appears to be, a common rural school from the 20's or prior. It has "FUEL" written all over it. Once the fire goes through the roof, in conventional fire fighting, it's too late.

@Zugvogel1 Nevermind just read your comment again you did want to vent the roof. I see what your saying and yah your right.
Just to answer the question about why they cut the vent hole. All that smoke coming out of that vent hole is potential fuel. When it gets hot enough it will light off, in the building or not. The firefighters cut a vertical vent hole to slow horizontal progression of the fire and to relieve the smoke, heat and pressure inside so firefighters on the hose line can make an attack on the seat of the fire without getting too beat up.
