@MrFkanik Are you stupid? This man, Moriteru Ueshiba, is the grandson of Morihei Ueshiba O Sensei and he IS a follower of Aikikai (traditional) Aikido.
-
@shihonage Indeed. During the lessons I'm very critical. I tell my teacher: "But in real life the attacker could still to this or that or that, etc." To which he replies: "This is a mere form; it is a way to learn the form/principle. Mastering the form is the ultimate goal."
As you said, we shouldn't judge Aikido on loose techniques.
-
@muyiwamc2 To that I want to add that in Aikido we're not that "stupid" to design one particular technique for one particular attack. In Aikido we train principles which we can apply in real life.
If you know the principles, you can save yourself improvising with these principles and it WILL work. Going trough your memory to memorize the technique for an attack is least effective when in such a situation.

If the purpose for "changing" aikido was to sell it, then they would make it more violent, because that's what most people like, most people are so narrow minded that if they don't see a guy getting pounded or submitted by a position that completely compromises nage's posture they assume it's unnefective or fake. I've witnessed people getting kicked out of my dojo for being disrespectful. So no it's not about "selling it". The art is harly known in america as it is anyways so I don't know why

Combat Aikido? What is that? I've studied Aikido for over 40 years it sounds like complete nonsense. Who teaches this? In truth there is no 'combat version' of Aikido. Things are just a bit different on an applied level. Someone who really is proficient in the art form is completely unpredictable and technically explosive. It would be very difficult to distinguish such a thing from 'combat karate' or 'combat jiu-jutsu'. Hikitsuchi Michio asserted Aikido practice as 'wielding a live blade.'
-
@dojomania True, but Aikido was also initially trained as a viable martial art. O Sensei was no stranger to violence or temper tantrums, and neither were many of his prominent students.
To haters: what this video shows is just one of the many ways to do kote gaeshi. There are much more practical, direct ways, and a good dojo makes them a part of the cirriculum. Judging Aikido from these disconnected segments is stupid.
-
Dont lie to yourself. This is the modern "shame / lame" hombu style of aikido. There is no combat version for it, you always train same method and with that method it not hard to eat a punch in your face.
I am sorry for being offensive and believe me modern aikido lost his way... if you still want to practive aikido go and learn traditional aikido. They changed modern aikido to sell it easier.. money money and moreee money

ai ki do is thebest ever im orange belt

@ketsan you train in the parts you find the most difficult so that you learn from the intricacies and principles that make it more difficult so that you can apply those principles to your finished product and make your finished product better. That's the whole point of it being difficult.

@sum1otosh1 And what do you mean "it's not about being easier"? What you deliberately don't do the technique correctly because that would just be too easy?
To all critics, aikidoka arent practicing this day in day out just for that one possible streetfight, Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world,so why bother?.True budo spirit is the goal, it isn't all about acting or looking tough. The only important struggle to win is the one within ourselves.Like the story about the monk and the samurai goes."here open the gates of hell(anger, self righteousness)..and here open the gates of heaven(being at one with oneself and the world)."

I wonder if any of you understand this is a demonstration. In real life, the entry to this technique would be damashi/kuzushi, some form of deception and taking the opponent of balance to distract the opponent before applying this technique. You seem to forget the Japanese were killing themselves on battlefields. They would not use this technique if it were not effective. Besides this is the demonstration version, the combat version is very different.
