In March 2012, Westchester Community College hosted a regional conference on the establishment of "tobacco-free" college campuses. Ty Patterson, director of the National Center for Tobacco Policy, discussed the college's new policy. By the fall of 2012, Westchester Community College will be the first higher education institution in the county to have a tobacco ban. At the March event, Patterson discussed key steps for implementing a tobacco-free policy. Representatives from other colleges from the region attended to get advice. The Westchester Community College Advisory Committee for a Tobacco-Free Campus sponsored the event, along with the American Lung Association in New York, POW'R Against Tobacco, and the American Cancer Society.
