I don't think nativeOrder() is about garbage collecting. It's about making sure that the most significant bytes of the numbers (floats, shorts, etc.) are in the right place. Some machines use Big Endian, some use Little Endian--mixing the two up can really screw your numbers up (eg: turning a short 0x0001 into 0x0100).
