The ancient Hebrews who composed what we now know as Genesis were brilliant storytellers and although their writings have for generations been thought to explain the how of what happened historically, their stories are much deeper and richer when they are properly understood metaphorically as wrestling with the whys of human life, as illustrated in this clip is from the new young adult study, "DreamThinkBeDo." • @davidtbeason I am a former fundi, too. I even attempted to try to go back to my southern baptist roots several years ago, with the goal of changing people's minds. I succeeded with only one person, the sunday school teacher, who was an ordained minister! He no longer goes to church, because he understands that the bible shouldn't be taken literally.

    peace

  • @peacelf Fear I can say that as an ex fundi everything has to be literal are your evil and will go to hell.

  • Let Stories be Stories, and the Scientific Truth be the Scientific Truth.

  • cont. They miss it because they're focused on a supernatural God, rather than a Natural God. They'd rather mistrust their own experiences and put faith in a supernatural creator. Why? 1) they're taught from a young age to fear God, not to question. 2) Ignorance has empowered the church. 3) faith and the desire for "something else" beyond this life masks a real fear of death.

Those are my observations. There may be more reasons, but these are at the core of fund. Christians.

  • Great post. Too bad many Chrustians will not watch this.

I remember watching Joseph Campbell's video series with Bill Moyer, and Campbell pointed out that he had discovered over 200 creation stories involving a snake. A Snake? Well, anyone who understands biblical symbolism and phallic symbols will understand the human creation story much better. Eve was tempted by a serpent that walked upright. The imagery is simple yet profound. How could literalists miss this?
