There are two reasons why she "pulls those faces". The first is that the positioning of the jaw, lips and tongue help to produce the beautiful sound and her famously crystal-clear diction; and the second is that, in a big opera theatre, many singers expressions, at a distance, seem as blank as a plank ... big expressions allow the viewer to see the acting from way back in the theatre. I love how everyone is defending her ridiculous faces! She's got a beautiful voice AND her faces make people laugh. You can't ignore them or act like they are necessary for singing or stage acting, because they aren't, but you can just accept that what she does is unique and entertaining. Ha!
