To introduce the international cycling public to the 2012 RWC a promotional cycling trip from Copenhagen to Maastricht, the capital of Limburg, has been organised. This is the first time in cycling history that the World Championships has been symbolically transferred between the host countries in this way.
Cycling Team Limburg without Borders, cycling touring club of the Province of Limburg, will carry the starting flag of the World Championships from Copenhagen to Maastricht. On Sunday, Sept. 25th, the final day of the Road World Championships in Copenhagen, former world cycling champion and Limburg 2012 ambassador Jan Janssen received the start flag from UCI president Pat McQuaid. This handover took place immediately after Mr. McQuaid has started the men elite road race. The trip from Copenhagen to Maastricht is 1,200 km long and will be in 7 days. During the trip, a range of promotional activities are planned.
