There are two truck lifts on the M.V. CÔTE D'ALBÂTRE (see http://www.ldlines.co.uk/bienvenue_cote_d_albatre.php)
Each one can lift two artics at a time with a maximum total weight of 108T. The lifts work off a 1" thick steel rope which loops round various strategically placed pulleys.
Despite the fact that I booked the wrong ferry on the internet (I'd planned to go on the big new cataraman http://www.ldlines.co.uk/bienvenue_norman_arrow.php - Norman Arrow), it was a noteworthy journey purely for the facts of the truck loading procedures and the excellent food and restaurant areas on board...
One Portuguese truck nearly wore his tyres out climbing up the ramp.
Another (French) truck had a right old faff getting his long trailer landing legs over the top lip of the lift when it was in ramp mode..... he had to edge up so far. Stop. Then dump air from the trailer and go forward a bit. Stop. Then pump into his drive axles...etc etc etc
It took ages. He nearly ripped his unit's load up ramps during the process as well....
I bet that'll keep him in beer conversations for ages....
