This video is from the Sonics PPV telecast of the first home game in the newly remodeled Key Arena, from Nov. 4, 1995.
For those people who feel we've done nothing for the Sonics in Seattle, we did something for the Sonics 13 years ago, before Safeco Field, before Qwest Field, we remodeled the old, outdated Seattle Coliseum.
It was very well received around the league, and I'm sure David Stern loved that it was built to specifications that didn't fit NHL requirements, ensuring that Seattle sports fans would only have the Sonics to follow in the winter and spring.
So...Key Arena is no good anymore, after only 13 years? After it was loved by the team, and the league when it opened? Now a second remodel isn't good enough for David Stern or Clay Bennett? We have to give $500 million for a new arena, or the team leaves Seattle?
I post this video to show fans in Oklahoma that what David Stern and Clay Bennett are saying now, about how wonderful the Ford Center will be with a remodel, in 10-12 years' time, they'll be coming after you. Just like in Seattle, that remodel will not be good enough anymore. You're going to have to go through it all over again. And if you say, "enough!", you will probably lose your team too.
How messed up is the NBA business model, when buildings must be remodeled or built every 12 years? If you're not a fan of the Lakers, Bulls, Knicks, or Celtics, will your team be at risk someday?
For those who care, the Sonics beat the Lakers in this game, 103-89.

Think about it....1995 to 2009. Thats almost 15 years and even in 95 it didn't have the suites and club rooms modern arena's have. It had some I'll grant you but not the number of modern arena's have.
Watching that gives me a headache, he thought it was a great arena, one of the best ones in the NBA, Excuse me? David Stern to quote someone "You are A Liar!" How did your opinion change so much from 1995? BTW camhusky the comment you made about David coming after OKC in 12 years, I totally agree. What's going to happen if Clay Bennet starts complaining about the Ford Center or complaining about the lease in Oklahoma City in next decade? Simple say hello to the Kansas City or Las Vegas Thunder.
I love Oklahoma City. Beautiful city, friendly people. Don't hate the people of OKC. They were happy to finally have major league sports. I think it sucks that Seattle lost the Sonics, I hate it when sports teams, especially those with deep history, are bounced around the continent. ad287 aside, most people of OKC are good honest people. Besides, with the Thunder here now, I can't get my Mavericks games on Fox Sports anymore! ARGH!
oklahoma city is exactly that, just fucking boring... Seattle is a one of a kind city and is heads and shoulders better that OKC... your the same right winger thats user name is johnpaulmccain from the deep south
Oh, you don't have to welcome us to the NBA son, we we're welcomed into the league about 4 years ago. We're doing just fine. You guys know that this team is gonna get good and it's killing you inside. Oh well, I guess you guys shouldn't have fucked around huh? Had you handled your business, you'd still have a team. That's life I guess. It worked out real good for us. By the way Seattle, you're not gonna see another team in this lifetime. Trust me.
It's amazing how in denial Seattle is. They just lost their team becuz the organization was losing money and nobody was willing to step up to help with an arena deal and their answer is...."well, we renovated Key Arena back in '95, even though it was built in the 60s, we like it." That's their fucking answer? Are you shitting me? It's a fucking dump. The Mariners have Safeco Field, the Seahawks have Qwest Field, and the Sonics were playing in KEY ARENA? No wonder we took your fucking team.
LOL.. You are soo bitter. Get a life. Enjoy the 25 wins per season. Hows that Ford center coming along? having trouble with the tax subsidies? Better dig deep or else Kansas City or even China will take your team. LOL.. welcome to the NBA
Seattle fan, right? Well, just a thought: if the league will grant another franchise to the city, do you think they'll grant one to vancouver as well? The raps are good, but... i think we need a national rival. Not to mention that stern really screwed around with the teams in the northwest.
