Ziggy ELMAN (né Harry Aaron Finkelman, b. Philadelphia 1914 -- d. Los Angeles 1968) was an American jazz trumpeter most associated with Benny Goodman, though he also led his own band: Ziggy Elman and His Orchestra. His father was a violinist who had hoped he would play violin as well. Although, he learned to play the violin, Harry preferred the brass intruments. He began playing for Jewish weddings and nightclubs in Atlantic City -- where his family moved when Ziggy was at age four - and in 1932 he had his first recording, where he played trombone. At some point in the decade he adopted the name Ziggy Elman.

He joined the Benny Goodman orchestra as a trumpet player in 1936. His 1939 composition "And the Angels Sing" with lyrics by Johnny Mercer became the number one song in the nation. In 1956, he recreated his famous frailach solo along with the origianal vocalist Martha Tilton for the movie, "The Benny Goodman Story". After his work with Goodman he joined Tommy Dorsey's band and also played as a member of the United States Air Force during the war. He loved „frailach music", later known as klezmer, and made a few recordings of such with Mickey Katz. He led his own bands starting in 1947. In 1956 he had a heart-attack which curtailed his musical career. By the end of the 1950s he had to work for a car dealership and was financially ruined. He later worked in a music store and taught trumpet to some up-and-coming musicians. He died in 1968 at 54 and was buried at Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery.

Recording: Ziggy Elman and His Orchestra -- Bublitschki (Bogomazow), Victor 1938

„BUBLITSCHKI" (Bulkie Rolls) - composed in Russia by Bogomazow, in the beginning of XX century, quickly became one of the world-wide popular Jewish klezmer hits. On this traditional Jewish air, Elman emotes in his unique wailing manner - receiving support from pianist Jess Stacy and the rhythm section.

  • @donmoseslerman agreed... both influenced each other... as any culture would influence another after being exposed for such a long period of time.

I happen to love the sound ... buy sampling from other cultures we can really grow and learn more. A society free to borrow from others and the past is culturally richer in music.

  • for your information The jewish people lived in the Russia from the very beginning of its creation and share many words in language as wellas folk songs., don't knock the Jewish contribution to Russian music, you just come across like the antisemite that you are
