Freedom House Ambulance Service was started as a poverty program in 1967. Freedom House trained African Americans from Pittsburgh's inner city into the first paramedics in the US. This is an important "lost" piece of Black History, similar to the Great Debaters film. By screening the documentary of actual Freedom House members telling their stories we hope to ignite an interest in healthcare with today's youth. This is a clip from a Red Cross CPR class in Albany, New York and the Men of MODEL organization. For more info: www.freedomhousedoc.com

  • Then prove to me when the first advanced life support service was run by Freedom House. Prove to me when Gene Nagel first ran ALS services.

Not according to most historians. Sorry to burst your bubble man

  • I want to marry a black woman! Black Rules!

  • Freedom House was NOT the first paramedic unit in the US. It was the Miami Fire Department under Dr. Eugene Nagel. The paramedics started transmitting EKG's via radio in 1967 and in 1969 had the first paramedic save on the East Coast (Portland OR had the first paramedic save). Unless the Freedom House crews did defibrilation and telemetry first, they don't claim the title.
