Chase Stone Barn, Oconto Cty, WI

This rare stone barn was built in 1903 and is on the State and National Register of Historic Places, and is one of the last surviving barns of its kind in the country.

Its walls are made of solid fieldstone and mortar and are two feet thick. The stones were picked by hand from local farm fields over 105 years ago, but their origin was the Canadian Shield. The rock was pushed and tumbled through this region by massive glaciers during three known ice ages over the past 70,000 years, carving out much of Wisconsin's landscape.

The Town of Chase purchased this barn to protect it. They plan to make the property into a rustic country park to that people everywhere can enjoy it for future generations to come.

Wisconsin alone has lost over 80% of it's original barns, and I'm sure this is typical across the country. We can't save them all, but how great to save a few to remind us where we come from.
