Another rip-snortin` single from The Johnnys. This one circa 1987.
A Quote from The National Film & Sound Archives (of all places!)....
Elvisly Yours - The Johnnys
"Back in 1983, Roddy Radalj on guitar/vocals formed The Johnnys, espousing a 'dumb is good' philosophy for a style of music loosely called cow-punk. As a veteran of the original Le Hoodoo Gurus line-up and other new wave bands, he introduced this curious form of country music on steroids. Spencer P Jones arrived a year later and the direction for this immensely popular live band of the early 1980s was set. Their 1986 album Highlights Of A Dangerous Life was produced by Ross Wilson (Daddy Cool, Mondo Rock) and delivered 38 minutes of wild fast, twisted country songs, including Injun Joe, Showdown, and Deadmen From Boot Hill. In March 1987, Elvisly Yours was released, again produced by Ross Wilson. This demented tribute to the King of Rock And Roll came in a picture sleeve featuring the band in Elvis garb. This was probably their peak moment as the subsequent 1988 album Grown Up Wrong was unsuccessful, leading to the end of The Johnnys. Elvisly Yours recalls just what good idiosyncratic music really was around in the live music scene."
That`s the Australian music scene for those unfamiliar with this bunch of cow-punkers. I love the bit at the end of the clip where Hank Williams welcomes Spencer P Jones (Beasts Of Bourbon) into heaven!

  • Ok, thanks for this clip mate! I saw them over 100 times, used to be the tour manager, and me and my mate Iron Mike are in this clip! Dark suit, Ray Ban aviators, something in my pocket, 2:32 for about five or six seconds - whoo hoo! We were also in the Showdown clip. The Johnnys rule! And thanks again for this clip!

  • Unreal. Thanks for the comments. I only saw them once, when they supported The Dead Kennedys at the now no more Festival Hall in Brisbane. It`s over 20 years ago but I definitely remember their set as being 100% fun!

  • Hey Mouldytone, thanks for the clip. I actually met these guys at a club in Brisbane those many years ago. Very cool.

  • Brings back so many good memories!Saw them many times in France and Switzerland - where they recorded their live album.I remember having the privilege of playing Slim's rare Gibson (that you can see in this video and others:it has the upper cutaway of an ES 335 and the lower cutaway of a Lespaul!I haven't seen any others like this!) wearing Spencer's hat backstage at La Dolce Vita, Lausanne!

  • I was at the Dead Kennedys thing. The rabid punks were spitting on them and the lead singer said 'the Lord said that was a good shot!'.

The drummer is a genuine rodeo competitor. Billy Pommer jnr!
