Demonstrating again his propensity to go out on a limb, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) had some choice words of criticism for Rush Limbaugh, the conservative media talk show host who was the star attraction at last weekends Conservative Political Action Conference.

In a phone interview Monday morning with CNNs John Roberts, Paul said of Limbaugh He is a leader. He does say the right things now and I think a lot of people like to hear what hes saying but I think its also a little bit polarizing and confrontational and I think thats why the Democrats are bragging that Limbaugh now speaks for the Republicans so I guess the Democrats think its to their advantage if hes leading the charge.

Responding to a question from Roberts on what it means for the Republican Party that their spokesperson is a radio talk show host and not a member of the political leadership, Paul said, I think its pretty said. Its a good point to make. That means the Republicans are really starving for some type of leadership.

A 2008 presidential contender, Paul was a dark horse candidate for the Republican nomination. His advocacy against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as his criticisms of infringements on civil liberties under the Bush administration have often put him at odds with the majority of his party but have also led to strong support from civil libertarians.

He really doesnt broaden the base, said Paul of Limbaugh. Its still very narrow and thats why some of us would like to see an approach that would emphasize personal liberties, civil liberties, looking at the drug war Its really the old Republican Party because even Limbaugh was a big supporter of Bush so he doesnt have anything new either when it comes to bringing our troops homes, not expanding the war in Afghanistan..

In criticizing Limbaugh, Paul joins Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, who also had some unflattering remarks to say about the popular talk show host.

Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer, Steele said to CNNs D.L. Hughley on Saturday. Rush Limbaugh, his whole thing is entertainment. Yes its incendiary, yes its ugly.

Said Roberts of Paul, I was fascinated that in terms of expanding the base, Ron Paul is bringing a lot of young people in the door. Its fascinating. This 72-year-old white guy from Texas is bringing a lot of young people in.

Paul demurred though to Roberts enquiries of whether he would run for president in 2012.

I dont think so. Its a long way off. I can hardly imagine what [state] the country is is going to be in. Right now I just plan on promoting the cause.

  • The fact that people can speak in generalizations and hide behind words like 'terrorism' or 'hope' shows how far gone the intelligence in the US's populice has gone.

Simultaneously, there is a person, Ron Paul, who speaks in specific terms and with specific goals in mind. This person has specific arguments, ones that hold up to the rules of logic and empiricism, yet people condemn him as crazy or a crackpot.

As far as I am concerned, most of you are fucking idiots.I'm being objective here

  • Who will pick up the Ron Paul banner in 2012?

  • "a 72 year old white guy......" states John Roberts. Oh John, how racist a thing to say. I never realized that CBS allowed bigoted remarks like that on their network, especially coming from a CBS anchor without an audience. What's next John, racist remarks about Hispanics or Blacks? John, got any crude racist remarks about Herman Cain. The next thing John Roberts will be doing is mocking Muslims. America doesn't need racists like CBS' John Roberts on the air speaking his hateful rhetoric.

  • @10thAngel

gotta ride out the wave............what theyve been BANKING on

  • Rush Limpballs is a joke!

  • Republicans don't want the government to regulate anything. Except your morality and your behavior, in the form of the wasteful (and failed) war on drugs.

  • Paul was emphasizing that the GOP has no political leaders and that a radio talk show host is the closest thing we have to a leader (a title Rush neither desires or seeks). I don't think Paul was digging at Rush. In the end, Rush will support Paul when he wins the GOP nomination.

  • Limbaugh is among a handful of people who will inform you about a potential leader's radical agenda and tell you why it is counter to our Constitution. BBC, CBS,ABC have abandoned any form of reporting or investigation relevant to making a political decision. They are the Old Media. They are almost deceased.

    Good riddance -Viva the net!

  • Rush Limbaugh's a badass.

  • Ron Paul's a badass.

  • how do you know a total free market would be dangerous? It has never really been tried out, governments will always interfere and will always grow as soon as the free market has created wealth, it's like a gold mine for the government, that's why you need to follow the constitution which defines the government!, I can't say this enough!

Also the bubble economy is a result of government intervention, b/c of the government, now the banks have learned nothing from their mistakes
