Summary: Students worked individually and in teams to produce a series of 5 minute digital videos describing stories related to their
experience with Dorthea Dix Hospital. They reviewed story and schema theory, applied techniques of visual analysis to critically analyze popular films featuring the landscape, developed storyboards to present their own original video ideas, produced "animatics" of
storyboards to pre-visualize their videos, and produced finished
digital video work.
Dorthea Dix Hospital was selected as a site for inquiry because of its
rich historic legacy, diversity of on-site and edge conditions, and
its current status as a candidate for urban development. Students were
empowered to select and pursue their own perspectives on issues, and explore digital video techniques that best served their
investigations.
After screening the videos, you are welcome to engage in a dialouge
with the students about their work. The students were charged with
answering two questions:
1) What is their story? And how did they make production decisions to
support their story?
2) What did they discover about the site through digital video that
they may not have learned using other landscape architecture
documentation techniques?
Other questions and comments are welcome.
Nice video. Liked the music and enjoyed the scenary. I am saddened by this because very soon all of that beautiful land will be gone due to the fact that they have closed the hospital and they want develop the land into some kind of park. Of course build condos for the yuppies.
