This demonstration measures the amount of force needed to depress the spring a pre-set distance. When FFs keep their hands toward the center of the halligan, it takes a much more force to activate the light. In the second attempt, hands are brought toward the end of the halligan resulting in less force needed to move the spring, thus illuminating the light.
