The glow of gas lights, antique architecture, carolers, roasting chestnuts, period Santas, the sound of horse-drawn carriages on the frosty brick street. The historic 19th century setting that had a restoration rebirth in the latter half of the 20th century becomes every winter the Christmas of our collective storybook imaginings. Christmas Traditions, a season long event beginning Friday after Thanksgiving, attracts bustling crowds to the Historic District.
Thousands of candles held by marchers and onlookers light the way of the Las Posadas walk held the first Saturday in December. The tradition originated in Spain and is reenacted every year in the Historic District to celebrate our Spanish heritage: The name of the French settlement of Les Petites Cotes was officially changed to San Carlos in the year 1791 when Spain took control.
