At 1937hrs on Wednesday 4th January 2012, locomotive DC 4951 propels its SA set out of Swanson station in West Auckland, bound for Newmarket, on the first day of regular operations with new new signalling system and crossover in action, enabling bi-directional departures on either track at Swanson.

  • first time I've seen overhead catenary lines in new zealand.

  • @EAFSQ9 - We have over 500km of electrified tracks here (Wellington suburban and Hamilton-Palmerston North), which will become about 640km after the Auckland Electrification Project is completed in 2014. Used to have a couple of short sections in the South Island as well, but they were dieselised in the 1970's and 1990's.
