Dingo, the F4 was a high speed interceptor designed to shoot down Russian bombers with missiles. They eventually were fitted with a gun pod underneath the fuselage. And the later models were fitted with a gun. The doctrine of SAC was a lot different before they became involved in the Vietnam War. You can't jam a heat seeker, but you can force it to break lock. RADAR guided is a bit harder but can be done as well.
