Fowler's Best Man Speech

Here's my 3rd Best Man Speech, for my friend Sam. I remember looking for tips on YouTube the first time I gave a Best Man speech, so maybe this will help some people. I'm not claiming to be an expert, but my top 10 tips are:

(1) Speak clearly and boldly. It definitely won't be funny if they can't hear it!
(2) Get a guaranteed laugh early to boost your confidence; as soon as you get one you'll have the ball rolling and set the tone.
(3) Be slightly controversial, but not enough to upset the bride or grandparents etc!
(4) RELAX. Take your time, if it's good it can be long! (Aim for 10 mins max - I went over but seemed to get away with it).
(5) If a joke bums out, move on without a pause and forget it, or it'll start going rapidly downhill.
(6) Use original material if possible; so much stuff is overused and not funny to anyone who has heard it before.
(7) It's your job to be funny but also tell stories and make people smile about the Groom. If you can't do the former, just stick to the latter and it can still be a good speech.
(8) If you're unsure whether it's good or appropriate, run it by a friend in their 20s and their 50s - remember your audience is broad, they're not all your age!
(9) If you feel awkward, so will the audience! Just chill out and take your time, this is probably the easiest audience you will ever address because they want it to be funny as much as you do.
(10) Mild humiliation is ok. Complete embarrassment is not - you'll ruin it. You're supposed to be his BEST Man!
