Video games like Wii Sports and Dance Dance Revolution can play an important role in getting kids off the couch and involved in physical activity. But U-M fitness experts say they are not a replacement for traditional exercise, and burn few calories.

  • I'd like to see her do DDR on the highest difficulty setting and then have her tell me it only works up a little bit of sweat or involves just a tiny flick of the wrist...

  • Geez. Some parents (my mother included) have bought the Wii thinking of it as an exercise machine for kids. Due to those surprising facts from you guys, I use the Wii as a warm-up, between toning exercises, and as a cool-down after doing the stepper machine only. If kids see it as "real exercise," they are looking at, say, Bowser in Mario's overalls.
