Strings arranged/produced by Duncan Watt
When my good friend Gene McDaniels asked me to write a string arrangement for him, I jumped at the chance - Gene's a legendary singer (his first of many Top 10 hits, "A Hundred Pounds Of Clay", was in 1961), a phenomenal songwriter ("Feel Like Makin' Love", "Compared To What"), and his seminal funk work been sampled by Tribe Called Quest and the Beasties (that's him on "Get It Together", on Ill Communication). Gene played me the tracks, said 'which one you wanna work on?', but there was only one choice - this one.
Flat-out the most beautiful piece of music I've ever been privileged to work on. We dubbed the strings onto the track last, at Futura outside of Boston, with some amazing players from the BSO. To me, the song is a reflection on a life well-lived, by a man who's lived more than anyone else I know. - Duncan
