I saw this lineup open for Uncle Tupelo for two nights in Minneapolis in March 1994. At the time, Uncle Tupelo was on their last legs and Jay Farrar asked Jim Boquist (bass) and Eric Heywood (pedal steel) if they had any interest in working with him later on. They said yes and the results were Son Volt.
What a great performance...and what a great band. Tim O'Reagan, who would later join the Jayhawks, on drums. Jim Boquist, who would later be Son Volt's original bass player and play with Paul Westerberg. Pedal Steel player, Phil Heywood, who would become a member of Son Volt and play on many great records. Mike "Razz" Russell, who would play fiddle with The Jayhawks, Syd Straw, and the Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers (Mark Olson/Victoria Williams).
