Posted this due to some demand from people wondering about this somewhat rare option. Properly known as the Multi-Funktions Anzeige or MFA, this came on GTI, GLI and GLX models. The winshield wiper stalk is used to toggle between the 5 modes. The button on the bottom of the stalk toggles between the "1" (saved current trip) and "2" (saved overall trip).

In the video, the displays are as follows:
1: real-time MPG readout.
2: minutes spent in car. 1 is minutes since I entered the car, and 2 is since I reset the thing at the gas station 5 minutes after starting.
3: average speed travelled. 2 is higher than 1 since I travelled nothing but highway after filling up my car
4: miles traveled. I traveled 1 mile to get to the gas station hence the discrepency
5: average MPG
6: back to the real-time readout. I gunned the VR6 to lower the MPG then I popped it into neutral to make the MPG go up to 199 (the max it will display). If you cruise down in gear it just displays "-- --" until you give it gas again, but if its in neutral it will display much higher MPG's which can throw off the average MPG readouts if you do it too much.

Apparently you can simply swap gauge clusters with one of these if you want to add this in your GL or GLS model, however I would think you'd need the wiper stalk also since it has the buttons that control the display.

  • such a random video ha i have the GLX so i have it thanks for explaining everything i only paid attention to MPG overall lol i didnt know what the rest stood for. Weird that people would ask. but do u know mine will sometimes be really red so i can read it other times its faded so i cant see... how do i fix that if you know or do i need a whole new one?

  • @jagstang4life lol yea...the vid is random. I had the same problem with my display showing dim on the bottom half. on VWvortex this seems to be a common problem and you basically have to open the gauge cluster and replace the bulbs inside to fix the problem.
