Misleading title. This is actually Alan Moore on Ditko. Is it fair to allow a man to be defined by someone who is hostile to his views?
-
I thought it a bit ironic that Moore would laugh at Ditko's describing Rorschach as Mr. A, but insane implying that Mr. A, and anyone who thought like him, was insane. Moore is absolutely the last person to be throwing those types of stones.
Rorschach was the greatest character he ever created, but he didn't. Ditko did.

Reading Watchmen and thinking "wow! these superheroes are so cool I want to be like him" is like reading V for Vendetta and going "wow! Norsefire are so cool, I totally want to be like them"

Rorschach is a bigoted recluse that never showers, is horribly homo-phobic and misogynistic and is in general just a really sad and pathetic man who feels the need to empower himself by dressing up like a moron and go out and assault people.
The entire point of Watchmen is that no one would ever become a superhero without having some serious issues.

@seminoleboy96 if you look at it Verit and Rorschach have one thing in common, both will go out of there way to acive what they beleive to be right, stopping a nucleare war that can destroy the human race, killing anybody that commint a crime.

So roschach is mad? Yet alan moore believes in anarchy and looks like he needs a shower? His only redeeming quality is he gave us these master pieces. If anything Rorschach was the most human out of any of the heroes in watchmen. I wish he punched Dr. Manhattan straight in his stupid blue face. also i wish he killed veight that rich douche

go fuck yourself, ross.

You can tell Mr. A's an objectivist just from the enormous size of his word-flooded speech balloons.

@FreakBoi2008 That's what I thought you'd say. What you describe as "moral law" isn't what Objectivism prescribes. Objectivism proposes that there is an objective moral order, achieved through rational examination of the state of man. Murder, theft, rape, prohibition are evil because they destroy independent existence. Trade, independence and self-interest are good because they enable it. Objectivism says nothing about how you live your life so long as you do not harm others or their property.

@Hostile Productivity and the majority of human rights go pretty much hand in hand. What I mean by "moral law" is when you start to impose morals that are totally personal to you. I think the prime example of a moral law in our society is drug laws. Drug laws are based on a very objective view of "drugs are bad" without recognizing the fact that there would be less gang activity if they were legal, plus drug use could be limited to certain centres, thus keeping it off the streets.

@bluestrikemike I doubt it, Judge Dredd is merely a personification of fascism, one who subjectively enforced the restrictions of his society. Mr. A enforced objective morality as he reasoned it to be and was intended as a personification of rational individualism. "I am the law" and "A is A" are contradicting principles. Dirty Harry goes from fascist to individualist through the course of the movie.
Also, interestingly, Judge Dredd doesn't kill a lot of people. He arrests 'em. Mr A kills 'em.
Sorry !!
