what does hotch mean when he said that gideon is damned by his profound knowledge of others. i know what it means but why is he damned?

I've always thought that it meant he knows behavior so well that he thinks he knows everything there is to know about a person, which means he misses the opportunity to get to know them by simply talking to them (the way the rest of us do with our friends, etc). It could explain why he doesn't seem to have many friends and rarely interacts with the other team members in anything other than a professional way.

@ksprenger1 i always thought it refered to the fact that since he can profile people so well, he know their secrets and the things that haunt them and he then has to live with the other peoples "ghosts", not just his own.

@bandgeek5195 Something like that. He is deeply touched and affected by each and every person he examines. Sort of like how one's idealism becomes eroded through negative experiences, his own sense of humanity becomes shaken the more he comes to understand the minds of twisted and depraved individuals. And he *knows* this. It troubles him deeply yet he feels compelled to carry on. Hence the term 'damned'.

@godofcs36 I agree with Bandgeek5195 but i also think it goes deeper than that... I once read a line in a book that to understand someone fully you must love them... love them like they love themselves... if Gideon were so blessed as to understand truly what his unsubs were and to truly get their desires and their hopes and dreams he would have to become even if just in mental form that kind of monster himself.. so now he is haunted by the knowledge that he could be just like them very easily..
