Union Pacific 3985. Des Plaines, Illinois

Union Pacific Challenger 3985 4-6-6-4 Des Plaines Illinois. Running on the freight only line between Proviso yard and Highland Park on way to Milwaukee. Several railfans were gathered at the Rand Road crossing and formed a photo line. Nobody else was there until just before the train showed up, then everybody in Des Plaines showed up including the guy in the gray shirt who parked himself in front of us.

The Challenger is quite a beast. The Big Boy was larger, but at least the Challenger is in steam.
